SALT LAKE CITY — Rangers captain J.T. Miller is day to day with an upper-body injury, the team announced Saturday.
“Tough guy to replace,” coach Mike Sullivan said. “He’s hard to play against. He makes an impact on the game even when he doesn’t end up on the scoresheet.”
Miller appeared shaken up after a second-period power-play shift in Thursday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche, but the left winger remained in the game and scored a power-play goal in the third period, his second goal of the night.
With Miller out, the Rangers went with these lines at Saturday’s morning skate in Utah:
Artemi Panarin-Vincent Trocheck-Alexis Lafrenière
Will Cuylle-Mika Zibanejad-Jonny Brodzinski
Conor Sheary-Noah Laba-Taylor Raddysh
Adam Edström-Sam Carrick-Juuso Pärssinen
Cuylle replaced Miller on the top power-play unit. He took the net front position with Trocheck in the bumper. Adam Fox quarterbacked the unit with Panarin and Zibanejad on the flanks.
Miller has six goals and 12 points in 22 games. Though the captain had two power-play goals against Colorado, he has struggled to generate offense at five-on-five this year. Still, he has been solid defensively while taking on some of the Rangers’ toughest assignments. His loss is a significant setback for New York, which is trying to get back on track after three consecutive losses.
Defenseman Will Borgen (upper body) remains day to day and also won’t play Saturday.
