New York City’s always been about its doughnuts, whether they be yeasted, cake, or even mochi; glazed or jam-packed with jelly; frosted or plain. Out-of-towners are increasingly capitalizing on our cravings: Earlier this year, the straight-from-Japan bakery I’m donut? made its American debut in Times Square, boasting of fluffy doughnuts made with pumpkin. Last year, Toronto-based COPS debuted in Greenwich Village, with its suggestive ads and tiny doughnuts drizzled with toppings.
The next expansion comes from a national chain known for its stoner vibes and over-the-top doughnuts. Portland-based Voodoo Doughnut is opening its first New York City location. It’ll be located right at Union Square Park on 41 Union Square West, at East 17th Street, with no opening date yet.
The Portland-based business is known for its outlandish doughnuts, such as the bacon maple bar, the Grape Ape (a vanilla doughnut with grape dust), and the Maple Blazer Blunt, a doughnut in the shape of a giant joint. There are also traditional and vegan options. Expect late-night hours too.
Voodoo Doughnuts started in 2003 in Oregon and has since grown with locations across the country. This NYC shop is one of three new expansions, including Miami.
