Location matters when you’re an Olympic hopeful. Brooklyn DePriest’s family traded their perfect neighborhood for a shot at Olympic gold. DePriest grew up in Rocklin, California, a suburb of Sacramento, where his family lived in what they describe as “the perfect neighborhood.” “There was probably about 10 families involved in the neighborhood that we were all a part of, and we got to hang out with friends every single day. We would ride to school on our bikes and skateboards every single day, ” DePriest said. The DePriests spent their weekends two hours away in Tahoe, where their boys were on the snowboard team at Northstar California Resort. DePriest showed talent early and expressed an interest in turning pro and possibly going to the Olympics. By the time he was 12, coaches recommended the family move to one of three locations for more elite coaching. One of those locations was Vail, Colorado. Jarrod DePriest, Brooklyn’s dad, worked remotely and got his boss’s support to relocate. Courtney DePriest said leaving their Rocklin neighborhood was hard, but they found a new community that offered their kids good schooling in addition to snowboarding. And they still visit California. “You sacrifice and we’re happy in Colorado, and we’re lucky we can still visit our friends and get together with them,” Courtney DePriest said.Jarrod DePriest said it wasn’t easy deciding to make such a major family decision. His advice to other parents of talented young athletes? Make sure you’re chasing your kid’s dream and not yours. “Let’s say you have an 8, 9, 10-year-old. It has to be fun, and it has to be their dream. If that’s their passion, being able to provide them the avenue is great, but it has to come from them,” Jarrod DePriest said. Seven years after the DePriests left their perfect neighborhood for Colorado, Brooklyn DePriest is a contender to represent Team USA in snowboard slopestyle at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. And Brooklyn DePriest is appreciative of his entire family’s support for his Olympic journey.”I was honestly so blessed, so fortunate to have them as parents,” Brooklyn said.
