QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — A Queens man has been convicted of the murder of his nephew during a Memorial Day weekend barbecue, District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Wednesday.

Durran Morgan, 40, was at the family’s home in St. Albans on May 27, 2023, for a barbecue, according to the original charges and testimony.

Morgan and his 25-year-old nephew, Chevaughn Millings, were said to have gotten into a fight over payment for the meal. Millings and another guest at the house pushed Morgan out of the side door.

Morgan then came back through the front door, confronted Millings, pulled out a gun and shot him 10 times, according to testimony. Millings died from the injuries to his stomach and legs. Trial records show that Morgan’s 20-year-old niece was hit with bullets in the leg and grazed in the forehead.

Katz said Morgan then fled to Georgia after the incident and later returned to New York to surrender himself.

The trial began on Thursday and concluded on Tuesday. The jury deliberated for under two hours before delivering a guilty verdict for murder.

“What should have been a joyous holiday weekend turned to complete tragedy when the defendant shot and killed his 25-year-old nephew over a petty dispute about food payment,” Katz said.

Morgan will be sentenced in December, where he is facing up to 50 years to life in prison, according to Katz.
