Thanksgiving may be the kickoff to what is known as the most wonderful time of the year, but the stress of the holidays can put a strain on even the best relationships. In fact, divorce cases spike right when the holiday season wraps up in January.

Legislation sponsored by New York state Sen. Liz Krueger passed both houses of the Legislature this year and could help make an amicable split a little easier. It would allow for no-fault separation in cases where the relationship between spouses has broken down “irretrievably for a period of at least six months” while also requiring that issues relating to custody or visitation have been resolved.

State Sen. Krueger joined Capital Tonight to discuss the bill, and where discussions with Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office stand as the governor works through pending bills by the end of the year.
