NEW YORK (PIX11) — As Thanksgiving travel to and from New York City ramps up for the evening rush, major airports have issued ground stops due to weather, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia Airports issued ground stops just before 7 p.m., with both expected to last until around 8 p.m. Just before 7:30 p.m., LaGuardia recinded its ground stop order.
JFK ground stops were issued due to cloud coverage, and LaGuardia due to thunderstorms in the area. Departure delays are averaging 30 minutes at both airports, and arrival delays at JFK are averaging 15 minutes and are increasing.
As of 6:53 p.m., Newark has average departure delays of 30 minutes and increasing.
On Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for low visibility and increased fog in the southern New York area.
