1. Nor’easter brings heavy rain, gusty winds to NYC
A nor’easter continues to slam New York City with heavy rain, damaging winds and coastal flooding threats.
Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for the city, adding thousands of utility workers to storm response efforts. Coastal Flood Warnings remain in effect through Monday evening as rain totals approach 3 inches.
2. Columbus Day Parade, Indigenous Peoples’ Celebration canceled amid nor’easter
Severe weather forced the cancellation of New York City’s Columbus Day Parade and the Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration on Randall’s Island.
Parade organizers said the event would not be rescheduled, though a special mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral is still on. The two-day Indigenous festival, one of the world’s largest, was also canceled due to rain and wind.
3. Federal shutdown closes Smithsonian museums in NYC
The federal government shutdown has forced the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum to close in New York City.
