STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Armani Perez scored nine of his career-high 26 points in overtime as Eagle Academy of Staten Island registered a 76-70 PSAL 3A victory over visiting Petrides on Wednesday at Dreyfus Intermediate School in Stapleton.
Anthony Riley added 21 points and 15 rebounds for Eagle, which improved to 2-2 overall, including 1-0 in league play. Justin Wembley chipped in with 14 for the winners.
Petrides played with only seven players because the majority of its roster had to sit out; those players are competing in Sunday’s PSAL 1A city championship game for the Panthers.
For starters, Malachi Rowland poured in a game-high 37 points, including six three-pointers and a 9-for-13 performance from the charity stripe. Kareem Nisbett and Sonyboy Zintamus added 20 and 10 points, respectively, for the Panthers.
“I give (Petrides head coach Nick Lezoli) a ton of credit because he coached his butt off getting his kids ready despite being short-handed,’’ praised EAII head coach Justin Spisto.
Thanks in part to 15 fourth-quarter points by Rowland, the Panthers owned a one-point lead late, but Perez hit a layup with just four seconds left in regulation to give the hosts a one-point advantage.
However, the Panthers forced overtime when they converted 1 of 2 freebies in the waning seconds.
With a new lease on life, Perez opened the extra session strong, hitting back-to-back three-pointers. The senior, who grabbed seven rebounds and finished with three treys overall, later added 3 of 4 free throws and Juneek Daniels added a big bucket as Eagle held on for the victory.

The senior buried each of his three treys in the second as the Centrals carried a 28-18 advantage into halftime.
New Dorp’s lead ballooned to 15 (48-33) after three behind Onwe, Batista and Fraser (combined 16 points) and it held off the Dragons in the final period.

Dominick Mennella led Tottenville (0-1) with 12 points on the strength of four three-pointers.
Albano, who is averaging 24.3 ppg after three contests, drained two of his three treys in the first quarter en route to 11 points, and Hoxha added seven markers as SW raced to a 33-13 advantage after one quarter.
“Albano played another stellar game (in every facet),’’ said SW head coach Danny Lanigan. ”And (Gambino, Humes-James and Hoxha) were solid on both ends of the floor to help us get off to a quick start.’’
The Falcons never took the foot off the pedal as Humes-James tallied eight in the second quarter to help the Falcons build a 49-26 lead at intermission and they sailed the rest of the way.

MSIT head coach Charlie Donohue, meanwhile, is now on the precipice of history after earning his 299th career win. The long-time coach’s next victory will make him only the fifth Island coach to eclipse the 300-win mark.

Jordan scored in a variety of ways against the Raiders on Wednesday. The senior had a pair of treys, three three-point plays and sank 11 of 13 free throws.

SIA 83, Xaverian B 49
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Tigers opened their season with a resounding victory over the host Clippers in a non-league Thanksgiving Eve match-up.
SIA was led by seniors Danny Nowak and Luke DeVito, who scored 23 and 19 points, respectively.
Ten first-quarter points from DeVito got the Tigers off to a strong start in the opening quarter. Nowak would chip in with six markers, and the Tigers sank 5 of 6 free throws in the period to take a commanding 22-8 lead as the teams headed to the second quarter. Six different Tigers would then score in the second period, helping the visitors head to the locker room with a 39-16 lead.
“I was very pleased with the intensity we came out with to start the game,” SIA’s head coach, Mike Mazella, noted. “Our defense and rebounding were solid, and we were able to get out and run for some easy looks. You sometimes worry about first-game jitters, but we have an experienced team that was able to generate some early offense that got us into a nice rhythm.”
In the second half, Will Paige tallied eight points (and two three-pointers) in the third quarter, and seniors Lorenzo Malpeso and Jayden Ai also connected from long range to increase the Tigers’ lead. Nowak would score eight in the quarter.
In addition to Nowak and DeVito’s double-digit efforts, Paige tallied 11 for the Tigers while senior big man, Johan Wielens, contributed nine.
The Tigers (1-0) return to action Tuesday when they head to Manhattan to take on ACIS rival Dwight in the Tigers’ first conference game.
