A Long Island county has plans for increased security measures on its border with New York City following Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral win.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman told Fox News he is ‘doing everything necessary to make sure Nassau County is safe.’

He announced plans to bolster the police force and increase collaboration with ICE which he says will protect residents from crime.

‘We are installing technology along the border to New York City that will read license plates, have facial recognition that will have video cameras,’ he told Fox.

Nassau County shares a border with the Big Apple borough of Queens. An estimated 300,000 Long Island residents make the commute to New York City everyday.

‘This new technology will enhance our ability to read license plates, improve video monitoring, and strengthen our overall security posture,’ he wrote on social media.

‘Nassau County will always take every measure necessary to keep our communities safe.’

Blakeman told the outlet that Mamdani ‘talks like he’s pro-criminal’ and has even called the new mayor ‘anti-American’.

Zohran Mamdani’s ‘radical policies have inspired a new focus on surveillance on the border’ Blakeman said

Mamdani has promoted pro-immigrant policies and even previously vowed to cut funding from the NYPD.

He has since walked back on that statement and recently decided to keep on police Commissioner Jessica Tisch from the Adam’s administration.

Blakeman vowed to tap into the Nassau County police force as a direct response to Mamdani’s ‘radical’ policies.

‘With the incoming mayor’s radical policies, we’re taking proactive steps to protect our residents and maintain law and order,’ Blakeman said in a social media post.

The Long Island county was declared the safest county in the country by US News & World Report in 2024.

The county executive is an avid Trump supporter and has critiqued Mamdani’s role as mayor even before he was elected this November.

‘We’re hoping [Mamdani] doesn’t get elected, but we will be prepared if he does,’ he told the New York Post in October.

‘We’ll hire more police officers, make sure that our patrols on the border are more intensive, and we will do everything in our power to keep the residents of Nassau County safe.’

He also threatened to stop sharing Nassau County Police intelligence with the NYPD.

Amidst Mamdani’s victory it seems that Blakeman has kept his promise.

One hundred cadets enrolled in Nassau’s police academy will graduate next year and join the police force along with hundreds of new hires.

Blakeman also ridiculed New York’s status as a sanctuary state, calling the position a ‘big mistake’.

Nassau County has taken a non-sanctuary stance, by Blakeman’s instruction. He praised the county’s ‘comprehensive agreement with ICE’ and robust police force.

Blakeman won re-election to the county executive seat on November 4 with his pro-law and order policies.

‘I never ran away from my pro-Trump policies,’ he said, discussing his win.

‘I supported the president, and I continue to support the president. People respected me for that, even if they disagree, because they knew that I wasn’t a phony.’

He is said to be eyeing a 2026 run at the New York governor’s seat.

The Daily Mail contacted Blakeman and Mamdani for comment.
