Thijs De Ridder scored 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting, Johann Grunloh had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Virginia defeated Queens 94-69 Friday at John Paul Jones Arena.
Sam Lewis added 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting (3-for-3 from 3-point range), and Devin Tillis had 13 points and five rebounds for the Cavaliers (6-1). They took the lead on De Ridder’s 3-pointer 17 seconds into the contest and coasted to a 46-29 halftime lead. They went on a 16-0 run late in the first half, turning an eight-point lead into a 24-point lead in four minutes.
Chance Mallory and Jacari White each scored 11 points, and Mallory grabbed eight rebounds. Dallin Hall led UVA with five assists.
Virginia managed 53% shooting from the field and 46% from beyond the arc, and held Queens to 38% and 31%, respectively. Nasir Mann scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting for the Royals (3-5).
ESPN EVENTS INVITATIONAL
Richmond 71, Charlotte 66: AJ Lopez had 17 points for the Spiders (6-1) in the ESPN Events Invitational Imagination Bracket’s consolation game in Kissimmee, Florida.
Jaden Daughtry scored 15 points for UR. Ben Bradford finished with 18 points and two steals for the 49ers (3-5).
BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS
No. 24 Vanderbilt 96, Saint Mary’s 71: Duke Miles scored 25 points, Jalen Washington added a career-high 19 points off the bench, and the Commodores (8-0) beat the Gaels (8-1) to win the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.
A 17-0 run put Vandy ahead 34-13. Saint Mary’s opened the second half on a 10-2 run to get within 53-44, but never made a serious threat.
Paulius Murauskas scored 24 points for Saint Mary’s.
OTHERS
No. 1 Purdue 109, Eastern Illinois 62: Daniel Jacobsen scored a career-high 24 points and had nine rebounds. The 7-foot-4 Jacobsen sank all of his eight shots and 8 of 9 free throws for the host Boilermakers (7-0). Jacobsen was one of six Boilermakers scoring in double figures. Fletcher Loyer scored 15 points, making all four of his 3-point shots.
Meechie White led the Panthers (2-5) with 23 points.
No. 5 Connecticut 74, No. 13 Illinois 61: Solo Ball scored 15 points for UConn (6-1), which never trailed against the Illini (6-2) at Madison Square Garden.
The Huskies did not dominate Illinois like in the previous meeting, when they scored 30 straight points in the Elite Eight on their way to the 2024 national title, but were more than effective enough. UConn won for the ninth time in its last 11 games at the Garden and improved to 15-8 in the building under coach Danny Hurley.
Kylan Boswell led Illinois with 25 points and nine rebounds.
No. 10 Florida 90, Providence 78: Xaivian Lee’s 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists guided the Gators (5-2) past the Friars (4-4) for third place at the Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego.
Boogie Fland scored 17 points, while Thomas Haugh had 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for Florida. Rueben Chinyelu had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Ryan Mela scored 17 to lead five Friars in double figures.
Texas A&M 95, Florida State 59: Rubén Dominguez poured in 21 points, Rashaun Agee 17 and Pop Isaacs 15 as the Aggies (6-2) routed the Seminoles (5-2) in Tampa, Florida. Agee grabbed 17 rebounds, leading to A&M’s 60-40 edge on the boards.
Kobe MaGee, with 21 points, was the only Seminole in double figures.
Wake Forest 86, Northeastern 73: Tre’Von Spillers scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Juke Harris also scored 17 points, and Wake (6-2) pulled away in the second half for a home win over the Huskies. Spillers hit 8 of 11 shots and Harris made 10 of 11 from the free-throw line.
Miles Newton scored 22 points and Xander Alarie 15 for Northeastern (3-4).
UNC Wilmington 87, Navy 57: Patrick Wessler had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Noah Ross had 15 points and nine rebounds as the host Seahawks (6-1) dominated the Midshipmen (4-4). Christian May had 17 points and eight rebounds for UNCW.
Austin Benigni scored 25 and Jinwoo Kim 16 for Navy, which trailed 45-19 at halftime.
Siena 70, Longwood 63: Brendan Coyle scored 23 points for Siena at the Capital Thanksgiving Classic in Washington.
Coyle shot 7 for 14 (5 for 12 from 3-point range) for the Saints (5-2). Justice Shoats added 15 points and six assists.
Redd Thompson finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Lancers (3-4).
