CHINATOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) — Protesters were seen at a standoff with federal agents and the NYPD at a garage in Manhattan’s Chinatown on Saturday, video from the non-profit Planet Over Profit shows.
The NYPD responded to a call for a disorderly group at Centre Street and Howard Street around 11:46 a.m., a spokesperson confirmed. Some people were taken into custody after officers instructed the group to disperse, but they did not comply, officials reported.
PIX11 News teams at the scene saw at least one person get taken into custody by police after throwing an object at officers. Other protesters and members of the press were pepper-sprayed.
Video from Planet Over Profit shows the moment NYPD officers stood between federal agents and protesters outside of a parking garage on Centre Street, while the crowd chanted, “ICE out of New York.”

Another video taken by PIX11 teams at the scene shows the moment federal agents tried to drive away while flanked by NYPD officers. However, a spokesperson for the NYPD says the department was not made aware of the federal enforcement beforehand, nor did they assist in detainments.
It was not immediately made apparent whether the federal agents were with ICE, nor why they were at the garage.
PIX11 reached out to ICE for a statement, but did not hear back at the time of publishing.
The appearance of federal agents in Chinatown comes a month after ICE agents previously raided vendors along Canal Street.
At least nine people were arrested during the raid, while at least four U.S. citizens were detained by ICE.
