NEW YORK (PIX11) — It will be mostly clear and sunny on Monday, before parts of New York and New Jersey see significant snowfall on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Expect bright skies and unseasonably cold conditions with highs in the low 40s. Clouds will then increase late in the day as our first winter storm of the season approaches the area tomorrow.

The five boroughs, Long Island, and the southern half of New Jersey will see mostly rain. Rain, possibly mixed with snow, will turn to all rain after 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to the NWS. New York City will see less than an inch of rain, but little or no snow accumulation is expected.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Orange County, with new Winter Weather Advisories now in effect for Putnam, Rockland and Western Passaic Counties.

Snow will be seen in northern Morris County, Sussex, Warren, and northern Passaic County in New Jersey, as well as the Hudson Valley. The heaviest snow will fall in the Hudson Valley, with accumulations of 6 inches or more likely.

Orange County could see 4 to 7 inches of snow, while Western Passaic, Putnam, northern Fairfield, and northern New Haven counties could get 3 to 5 inches of snow, according to the NWS.

The rest of the Lower Hudson Valley, Connecticut, and New Jersey may get 1 to 3 inches of snow before rain mixes in on Tuesday morning, according to the NWS.

Temperatures on Tuesday will be above freezing from the city south with a high of 41 degrees.  It will remain below freezing with highs in the low 30s north and west.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny, windy, and chilly as high pressure will move into the area from the west.  The high will be 39 in the city, upper 30s to low 40s in the suburbs.

Thursday will feature a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures in the upper 30s to near 40 for much of the area.

Friday will be mostly sunny, windy, and very cold as arctic air will overspread the region.  Temperatures will be well below average with a high of 31 in the city, low to mid 30s in the suburbs.
