Police say a woman who died after a crash in St. Lawrence County on Sunday had been attacked by her husband prior to the crash.

State police say they responded to a crash in the town of Waddington on Sunday morning, finding an SUV off State Route 37 which had hit a fence. They say the driver, identified as 66-year-old Yvonne McGrath of Lisbon, was taken to the hospital with injuries and later died.

Troopers said that, when they went to McGrath’s home, they discovered her husband, 70-year-old Paul McGrath, dead inside the home, having apparently died by suicide.

Autopsies performed Monday morning in Glens Falls determined Yvonne McGrath died of head and neck injuries suffered in an attack. State police say their investigation determined Paul attacked Yvonne with a knife and hammer as she was in bed, and she fled the house, driving west on State Route 37 before the crash.
