Winter has arrived in New York State. Several areas have already seen multiple inches of snow. In the Buffalo area, the Southtowns have experienced heavier snow than the northtowns, as per usual. Still, the entire region is snow-covered.

Single-Digit Temperatures Coming to Western New York

Temperatures have been pretty typical, hanging around in the 30s during the day, right around the freezing point, but that’s about to change. Deep freezing, single-digit temperatures, and not counting the wind chill, are on the way.

When will Single-Digit Temperatures Hit Western New York?

According to News 4 Buffalo meteorologist Mike Cejka, Thursday will be the coldest day of the season so far.

Some areas will drop below zero degrees. Buffalo will see a chilly 8 degrees.

Be Prepared for Cold Weather

Chances are, the City of Buffalo will open warming shelters with its “Code Blue” program. Be sure to layer and cover all exposed skin as these temperatures are dangerous and can cause frostbite.

Around your home, be sure your heater is in good working order. Replace the air filter if you haven’t recently. If you can, turn off the water lines to any outdoor hoses and prep them with fittings.

I find it’s a good idea to have a battery jump box handy, as these super cold temperatures can make starting your car a challenge. Buying a jump box makes it easy to jump-start your car, and they can usually be found at Walmart, for example, for under $100.

Make sure you also check in on elderly individuals and make sure they aren’t doing any heavy shoveling in this kind of cold weather.
