STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — St. Joseph by-the-Sea had the tough task of opening its CHSAA AAA slate vs. nationally ranked Monsignor Scanlan of the Bronx and suffered a 70-45 loss Saturday at home.
Sea was led by Olivia DiMonda (15 points, four assists) and Lila Goldstein (10 points), who was making her varsity debut.
Giovanna Grima chipped in seven points and three assists for Sea.
Scanlan’s recent Syracuse University commit, Madison Howard, led the Crusaders with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
“Always tough to start off a fresh season with a convincing loss, but we know where we stand with them now and will use the rest of the season to raise our game to their level in hopes of narrowing the gap the next time we see them,” said Sea head coach Josh Suslak. “We had five underclassmen making their varsity debuts and it was encouraging to see them play with no fear vs. such a formidable opponent.”
The Vikings return to action on Saturday with another league matchup at home vs. St. Francis Prep at 1 p.m.
