UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) — The Court of Appeals has upheld New York’s even-year election law.
The governor called it a victory for democracy and New Yorkers.
In May, the appellate court reversed a lower court ruling that said a State law combining local and federal elections in even years violates New York’s constitution.
Last year, Oneida County joined several other counties in filing a lawsuit against the governor and New York State to stop the State from moving some local elections to even years.
The governor said aligning local elections with State and federal elections makes it easier for New Yorkers to participate in government.
The counties that appealed said the lower races on the ballot would get overshadowed by the federal races.
This decision will not impact next month’s general election.
