Manhattan High boys’ swimming opened its season on Wednesday at the Topeka West Invitational, placing third while earning four state-level marks to set an early tone for the winter.
Manhattan collected 329 team points, slotting behind first-place Olathe Northwest (514) and league rival Washburn Rural (501). The Indians, coming off a league title in 2024 and an eighth-place finish at state, earned automatic berths in two relays, qualifying in both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle.
Manhattan saw junior Jack Dunn secure an individual state cut in the 500-yard freestyle, while adding a consideration time in the 100 butterfly. Wallace King notched a consideration time in the 50 free.
The relay success highlighted Manhattan’s depth in its season debut. The 200 medley relay hit the state standard behind a balanced quartet, and the 200 free relay followed with another qualifying performance later in the meet.
Dunn continued his strong postseason trajectory from last year with his 500 free swim at 5:15.54, which was good for first place and notched Manhattan’s first individual automatic time of the season. King’s second-place finish at 23.17 in the 50 free added to a productive sprint showing for the Indians.
Manhattan’s early-state qualifiers give the program a foundation to build on as it moves deeper into December competition. Up next, Manhattan heads to the Lansing Relay Meet on Saturday with events beginning at noon.
