It’s the end of an era.

December is the last month for MetroCards before New York City’s public transit system is taken over by OMNY.

With the big change quickly approaching, it’s time for New Yorkers to transfer their MetroCard balance to OMNY while they still can.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has switched out its mobile sale vehicles originally used for MetroCard assistance to now help commuters transfer their balances and learn more about the new tap-and-ride system.

MetroCard balances can be transferred up until their expiration date, which can be found on the upper left corner of the card — but the MTA strongly advises spending or transferring the balance before the MetroCard expires.

Commuters have until Dec. 31 to switch to an OMNY card to use all subway stations, MTA-operated buses, Staten Island Railway (SIR), Hudson Rail Link, the Roosevelt Island Tram, and AirTrain-Howard Beach and AirTrain-Jamaica stations in NYC.

How to get an OMNY card

OMNY cards can be purchased or reloaded at OMNY vending machines in most subway stations or at select retail stores across the city, such as participating Walgreens, CVS, 7-Eleven, CFSC Checks Cashed stores and bodegas.

You can also reload your card online through a registered OMNY account at omny.info/register.

How to transfer MetroCard balance to OMNY

Remaining MetroCard balances “will be eligible for transfer or reimbursement for two years after the expiration date on the MetroCard,” according to the MTA.

However, you can only transfer MetroCard balances to an OMNY card in-person at a Customer Service Center or at Mobile Sales Vans operated by the MTA. You cannot digitally transfer balances on your own or at a machine.
