STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island residents should prepare for extremely cold temperatures Friday with highs only reaching the low to mid-30s, according to the National Weather Service.

There’s a slight chance for light snow or freezing rain late Friday into Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service forecasts temperatures will bottom out in the teens and lower 20s Friday morning across Staten Island and New York City, with some daily record lows potentially being set. Temperatures will struggle to rise above the mid-30s during the day Friday, with clouds increasing throughout the afternoon.

A weak weather system passing to the south brings a 20-30% chance of light precipitation to the area Friday night into Saturday morning. The forecast calls for a mix of light snow or freezing rain/drizzle, with any accumulations expected to be minimal – perhaps a very light coating of snow or a thin glaze of ice.

The National Weather Service notes this could create slippery conditions, and a winter weather advisory may be issued later Friday as forecasters determine which areas are most likely to experience freezing precipitation.

Saturday will see temperatures recover to the upper 30s to lower 40s after any precipitation ends. Sunday will bring similar temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s before a cold front moves through Sunday night, potentially bringing snow showers.

The coldest air of the season arrives early next week. Monday and Tuesday will see high temperatures only reaching the upper 20s to 30s across the region, with morning wind chills in the single digits and teens, according to the National Weather Service. These temperatures will be well below normal for early December.

Looking ahead to midweek, a clipper system may move through the Northeast on Wednesday, bringing the next chance for precipitation, with potentially another system later in the week.
