STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A bus slammed into a utility pole in a shopping area in Charleston on Friday morning, snapping the wooden structure in two.

Emergency officials blocked traffic on Veterans Road West as they responded to the scene.

The crash was reported about 8:20 a.m., according to emergency radio transmissions.

The pole was snapped in two, about 15 feet from its base. The bus’s front windshield was shattered.
