Manhattan High boys’ basketball closed out its weekend at the Hays City Shootout with back-to-back wins, including Saturday’s 46–41 victory over Hugoton to claim the consolation championship and a fourth-place finish.

The Indians (2-1) responded well after Thursday’s opener against Life Prep Academy, using improved defensive stretches and balanced scoring to leave the tournament above .500.

Friday’s 55–37 win over Newton set the tone for the turnaround. Manhattan led 28–24 at halftime before putting together one of its best defensive halves in recent memory, holding Newton to just 13 points after the break. The Indians steadily extended their lead in the third and fourth quarters.

Senior guard Vince Doering paced Manhattan with 16 points, while Henry Witt added 12 and Will Carpenter scored 11. Sawyer Newton and Tim Washington each chipped in six as Manhattan’s rotation settled into a rhythm across the final three quarters.

On Saturday, Manhattan finished the job with a grinding, possession-by-possession win over Hugoton. After trailing 18–7 at the end of the first quarter, the Indians completely flipped the game with a 15–0 second-quarter run, using defensive stops to build momentum and eventually take a 22–18 lead into halftime.

The teams traded baskets throughout the second half, but Manhattan’s composure late helped secure the 46–41 win.

Doering again led the Tribe with 14 points, while Witt added 11 and Carpenter scored eight. Sophomore guard Asher Newton provided a spark with five points off the bench, and junior Tyson Hattrup added four in a physical matchup around the rim.

Manhattan High returns for the home opener against Salina Central on Tuesday.
