The Annual African Diaspora International Film Festival is underway this week in Manhattan, marking its 33rd year.

The lineup includes 70 films screening across three locations, including in Harlem, with select titles available to stream online.

The independent movies span stories from New York, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa and beyond, and aim to highlight the experiences of people of color through both fiction and nonfiction storytelling.

Festival co-founder and co-director Diarah N’Daw-Spech says the event creates crucial space for filmmakers who often struggle to find platforms for their work.

“It’s more than entertainment, it’s a way to discover a new world to be acquainted with other lives, other people’s lives of African descent anywhere in the world and see what we have in common, what we have that’s different,” N’Daw-Spech said.

The festival runs through Sunday, Dec. 14.
