NEW YORK (WBNG) — For the 15th year, hikers of all experience levels are gearing up for First Day Hikes to celebrate the new year.

On New Year’s Day, parking fees have been waived at all state parks to encourage people to get offline and outside.

To find a First Day Hike near you, visit the New York Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s website.

Most hikes are beginner-friendly and family-friendly, typically ranging from one to five miles depending on the location and trail conditions.

This year, more than 125 hiking sessions being offered at
state parks, historic sites, Department of Environmental Conservation, or DEC, natural areas, environmental education centers, canal trails, and other public lands.

Many of the hikes will be led by community partners and local stewards of the park. Some hikes, however, require pre-registration via the DEC’s website.

In Broome County, a First Day Hike will be held at Chenango Valley State Park at 1 p.m. Small snacks, coffee, and hot chocolate will be available at the park’s Great Hall
