The weather is going to shift to different extremes in New York State this week. The driving conditions right now in New York State are pretty bad. The snow has turned wet, which is making the snow slushy, heavy and slippery. Expect people to go very, very slow while driving around town today.

A few more inches of snow is expected today.

Rain is expected to come later on Wednesday afternoon, which may wash most of the snow away at least on the plowed roads. The real problem comes in when the temperature is expected to go down this week again and then everything on the roads will freeze. According to the National Weather Service:

Widespread snow is falling across the region this morning. With temperatures near freezing the bulk of the snow covered roads will be secondary and untreated roads. If traveling this morning allow extra time to clear your vehicle of snow and to travel safely through the snow.

What kind of salt should I get for my driveway?

Whatever you do, DO NOT over use rock salt. Rock salt will eventually start “chewing” up the driveway and sidewalks. If you use it often and too long on concrete it will eventually start forming a pit. We have so many little holes all over the driveway in one area where we always used rock salt. There are different alternatives that you can use that are similar that are NOT rock salt.

In addition, if you have a pet there is a certain kind of pet salt that keeps it a little bit safer. The difference between salt and pet salt is that it melts at different temperatures, so the pet salt doesn’t do melting in extreme temperatures.
