It’s time to fire up the sled! Snowmobile season is almost here in New York State. The cold weather has arrived, the snow has been flying, and soon the trails will officially open. But before you hit the throttle, there’s one costly fine New York State is warning riders about this season.
Winter Arrives Early in New York State
It has been extremely cold across New York State this week. Numerous winter storm warnings and lake-effect advisories remain posted for much of the region. It’s unusually cold considering we haven’t even reached the official first day of winter yet. But don’t let that stop you from getting prepared and making sure your snowmobile is ready to ride.
Have You Completed Your Snowmobile Checklist?
Have you gone through your preseason checklist? Do you have proper clothing, registration, and insurance? Has your snowmobile been inspected for issues? Is the track in good shape? Are there mice in the airbox? Do you need fresh carbides on your skis?
Getting everything set now can make a huge difference once the trails officially open.
Trails Don’t Open Unless Conditions Are Right
Keep in mind that snowmobile trails only open when several factors line up. Most importantly, trail conditions must be safe, and the local clubs that maintain them must give the green light. Across New York State, landowners and snowmobile clubs work hard to maintain the relationships that allow riders the privilege of enjoying these trails. The incredible system we enjoy exists only because of the dedication of clubs and volunteers who work year-round.
Be Careful With Modifications—They Could Cost You
When you fire up your sled, make sure you haven’t gone overboard trying to make it sound like a rocket. New York State has strict rules regarding exhaust and aftermarket modifications. Riders caught with illegal alterations can face fines up to $1,000.
I know loud sleds can be fun, but when you blast through a residential area, that’s where problems begin. If a landowner can’t sleep because of excessive noise, the relationship between clubs and property owners can quickly fall apart, putting sections of trail access at risk for everyone.
Early Trail Openings in Tug Hill
Some portions of New York State’s trail system are expected to open earlier than others, especially in the Tug Hill region, depending on conditions and the decisions made by local clubs. Always ride within your ability and follow posted speed limits.
In a post on Facebook, the Southern Tug Hill Sno-Riders mentioned that as of 12/9 their trails are OPEN. “Snowpack varies across the system and early-season hazards exist. Please ride cautiously, stay alert, stay on the marked trail, and respect landowners and volunteers who make this possible”.
