STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — With meteorologists forecasting the first snow of the season starting Saturday night, you may want to get a jump on hiring a snow shoveler if you’re unable to do it yourself.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Staten Island from 10 p.m. Saturday through 1 p.m. Sunday calling for two to four inches of snow in the overnight hours, according to the National Weather Service.

The heaviest snowfall is expected from late Saturday night through Sunday morning. Meteorologists are warning motorists to prepare for slippery roads and reduced visibility during the overnight and morning hours.

A rain or rain/snow mix is expected to start Saturday night before changing to all snow around midnight.

If you’d like to get paid to shovel snow for others, you can apply for a program run by the city Sanitation Department.

“Emergency snow shovelers are called on after heavy snowfalls to remove snow and ice citywide from public areas like bus stops, crosswalks and fire hydrants, and step streets,” said the DSNY. “We recruit temporary, per diem (by day) shovelers as needed.”

Pay starts at $19.14 per hour and increases to $28.71 per hour after the first 40 hours worked in a week.
