A man was brutally beaten outside the Beacon Theatre late last month in what police sources described as a dispute over $20, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury and a fractured eye socket.
According to a report by the New York Post, the victim, 47-year-old Sean Llewellyn of Point Lookout, Long Island, had just left a concert at the Upper West Side venue on the night of November 30 when the incident occurred.
Police sources told the Post that Llewellyn attempted to buy an item from a street vendor selling knickknacks outside the theater. After handing over a $20 bill, he was allegedly owed change, but the vendor ran off with the money. When Llewellyn chased after him, the vendor was joined by several other individuals who then began beating him, according to the report.
The attack sent Llewellyn to the hospital with a traumatic brain injury and a broken eye socket that will require surgery, his family said on a GoFundMe page created on his behalf. No weapons were believed to have been used in the assault, police sources told the Post.
As of Friday, no arrests had been made in connection with the attack.
Llewellyn’s family said he remains hospitalized and faces a long and difficult recovery. The GoFundMe launched to support the family has raised more than $160,000 toward a $200,000 goal.
“Sean is a dedicated family man, a proud sports dad, and the ‘fun coach’ everyone loves,” the fundraising page reads. “As the primary provider for his family, including his three young boys at home, this tragedy has created an overwhelming financial strain.”
The page also describes Llewellyn as a youth hockey coach and notes that he and his wife, Shannon, are deeply involved in their community, regularly volunteering, organizing fundraisers, and supporting local church and youth activities.
“With Sean unable to work and significant medical expenses ahead, the family needs support now,” the organizers wrote.
