STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As a way to celebrate the holiday season, honor a longtime holiday tradition, and foster camaraderie among the borough’s justices and judges, members of the Staten Island legal community gather each year to make merry.
The annual holiday gathering was initially the brainstorm of the late New York State Supreme Court Justice Philip G. Minardo, who was the first administrative judge of the newly created 13th Judicial District of Staten Island.

When Justice Minardo retired, party plans were taken over by NYS Supreme Court Justice Orlando (Lindy) Marrazzo Jr.

As a way to pay homage to Justice Minardo who passed away in April of last year, the party was renamed the Hon. Philip G. Minardo Holiday Party, and held in Bocelli Ristorante in Grasmere.

In his welcoming remarks Friday evening Justice Marrazzo noted: “It was Phil Minardo’s idea to celebrate the holidays with this party. And that’s why we named it after him. And I am sure Phil is looking down on us tonight.”

Justice Marrazzo offered the Invocation for Rev. Michael Martine, who arrived later than scheduled because he conducted a service to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe in Holy Rosary R.C. Church, where Rev. Martine serves as pastor.

“We are here to do justice and to be humble and to treat treat people in the way the Lord wanted,” said Justice Marrazzo. “And we thank you for for this time of joy and gathering as we celebrate the holidays. And we are grateful for the gifts of friendship, peace and the chance to connect outside our usual roles. May this evening be filled with warmth and gratitude and the true spirit of the season.”

Justice Marrazzo noted that last year NYS Supreme Court Justice Kim Dollard, who passed away in January, was present for the celebration. “I ask for a moment of silence for the late Kim,” he said. “Her husband Jamie is here tonight.”

On a happier note when Justice Marrazzo announced that Family Court Judge Karen Wolff was just reappointed — a rousing round of applause filled the banquet room at the Grasmere dining spot.

“And here for the first time is Civil Court Judge Matthew Santamauro,” Justice Marrazzo continued. “He’s been a friend and fellow barrister and like a brother to me. On Dec. 23 he will be sworn in as a Civil Court Judge.”

And now a retirement, he add. “Congratulations to Judith N. McMahon on her retirement from the bench,” he said. “I first met her when she was a court attorney for Judge Leone. And thank you because I’ve inherited her chambers.”
“Thank you to everyone here tonight,” said Justice McMahon. “And thank you for being fabulous colleagues. Being a judge is an isolated position. And it’s important to have people to talk to like Mario, Wayne and Lindy. I want to thank all of you. It has been a tremendous run. When you so enjoy what you do, it isn’t work, it’s a pleasure. God bless all of you and the very best to the 13th Judicial District.”
The evening’s entertainment was provided by renowned entertainer/singer/songwriter Alex Leonard on keyboard.
