Outgoing Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has been hired by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to serve as the new director of the state Canal Corp., the governor’s office announced Monday.

Walsh, an independent, has been mayor of the Salt City since 2018 and leaves office on Jan. 1. Hochul credited his tenure leading the city as credentials for leading the Canal Corp.

“Ben Walsh delivered real results for Syracuse, from revitalizing neighborhoods to preparing workers for the jobs of the future,”  Hochul said in a statement. “His experience driving collaboration and transformative growth will be an asset as we move into the historic canal system’s third century and will benefit the Canal Corporation, canal communities, and New Yorkers and tourists alike.”

Walsh will replace Brian Stratton, who has served as director since 2011, and is retiring at the end of December.

“New York State’s canal system is a jewel, and I have seen firsthand the positive impact the people of the New York State Canal Corporation have made on the economy, recreation and environment in communities across Upstate New York,” Walsh said in a statement. “I am grateful to Governor Hochul and NYPA President and CEO Justin Driscoll for asking me to join the Canal Corporation team and build on the history, progress and potential of the canal system.”

The state Canal Corp. is overseen by the New York Power Authority.
