GRAVESEND — THE COMMUNITY IS RESPONDING WITH GENEROSITY TO LAST WEEK’S THEFT OF DONATED TOYS from Assemblymember William Colton’s office.
The stolen gifts had been left in the Toys for Tots box in the office’s anteroom for the convenience of donors needing to do a quick drop-off. After the theft, staff moved the box into the main office area, where they can keep it within sight.
“In the last couple of days, there has been an outpouring of support that warms my heart, and I hope, when this is over, that we have a lot more toys for these children than we would have, had the theft not occurred,” said Colton in a prepared statement. Constituents and members of the community who wish to donate further may bring unwrapped toys to the district office at 155 Kings Highway during office hours: Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from noon to 8 p.m.; and Friday, from 10 a.m. to noon. The last day to drop off toys is Friday, Dec. 19.
The toy drive is being conducted in conjunction with Toys for Tots, which the U.S. Marines began in 1947 as an initiative that grew into a non-profit organization in 1991.
