A man was arrested after allegedly attacking a hospital worker with a pipe as she was on her way to work in the Bronx, one of multiple attacks the suspect is believed to be behind.
Virginia Alvarez can barely open her eyes, as the 46-year-old is covered in bruises and both wrists are in casts. But the emotional wounds are much deeper.
She was seen on surveillance video being punched repeatedly around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday as she was heading into work as a nurse’s aide. That’s when a man came out of nowhere and attacked, as police said he used a pipe to pummel her.
“I was crossing the street and the guy told me I killed his mother, and punched me in the face. I don’t know who his mother is. I don’t know his mother,” Alvarez told NBC New York. “I fell and he kept punching me and punching me. And I told him to stop and wouldn’t stop.”
But Alvarez would not be the only victim attacked that morning. About two hours later, a 15-year-old girl was also attacked on Louis Nine Boulevard. Just before 10 a.m., a third woman was beaten on Franklin Avenue.
All of the victims survived, police said.
On Thursday, police said they had arrested 23-year-old Jeremiah White, charging him with all three assaults. Attorney information for White was not immediately available.
White had been arrested for assault twice in recent weeks, but was released. The district attorney’s office said those charges weren’t bail eligible, but the more recent assault charges were. As of Thursday night, White had not posted bail, which was set at $600,000 for the two attacks, and $200,000 for the third.
