STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Nick Lee and Joey Moran combined for nine points in overtime as St. Joseph by-the-Sea registered a 55-47 CHSAA A division come-from-behind win over visiting St. Edmund’s Wednesday in Huguenot.
Moran led the way with 12 points while Lee and Nick Rebracca chipped in with 11 points apiece for the Vikings, who improved to 5-2 overall, including 4-2 in league play. Luca Mineo and Matthew Walker teamed for another 10 points for Sea.
Tristian Lewis and Kenyatta Wilkinson paced the Eagles (2-3 overall, 1-3 CHSAA) with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
The Vikings found themselves in a seven-point hole (34-27) entering the fourth when they turned in their most productive quarter of the game.
Rebracca nailed two of his three three-pointers, Lee added six points and John Paturzo chipped in with four as Sea forged a 45-45 tie at the end of regulation.
That’s when juniors Lee and Moran took center stage for the host team. Lee tallied five points — including 3 of 4 free-throw attempts — and Moran added a pair of buckets to help Sea outscore the Brooklyn school 10-2 and provide the final score.
Lewis and Wilkinson combined for 15 first-half points to build a 23-16 halftime lead for St. Edmund’s before the Vikings stormed back in the second half.
Farrell 35, Salesian 31
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Junior Jack Gomez turned in a stellar performance defensively and also scored each of his seven points in the second half as the Lions secured the CHSAA A division win over the host Eagles on Wednesday.
The Lions, who avenged a 53-52 home loss to Salesian just a few weeks back, won their third straight game to improve to 3-4 overall (2-4 CHSAA).
Junior center Matt Hanley, who missed the first matchup due to illness, led Farrell with 10 points. Gomez, Matt Scalisi (seven points), Michael Abreu (six points) and JJ Yates (five points) also contributed offensively for the Oakwood school.
Farrell head coach Danny Fisher praised Gomez for holding Salesian’s Kevaughn Mitchell to eight points in the contest. Mitchell, a junior, is averaging 13.8 ppg.
“We did a great job defensively today,’’ said Fisher. ”Jack Gomez had a tough assignment and did an admirable job.’’
The Lions trailed 14-6 midway through the second quarter when they started to get into a flow offensively. Scalisi and Abreu both buried threes and Hanley also contributed three points (basket, 1 of 2 free throws) as the visitors narrowed their deficit to 17-15 at halftime.
With Fisher’s troops tightening the clamps further defensively in the second half, they had five different players score in the third quarter. Gomez led the way with four points as Farrell took a 26-23 lead into the final eight minutes.
The Lions then staved off the Eagles in the fourth behind Hanley’s five points and a big Gomez three-point play.
SIA 74, St. Ann’s 62
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Tigers remained unbeaten to start the season, moving its mark to 8-0 with the ACIS victory over St. Ann’s on Wednesday.
With the win, SIA remains atop the ACIS standings with a 6-0 record.
Luke DeVito led the Tigers in scoring with a game-high 28 points. Danny Nowak added 17 and Gabe Moschella chipped in with 13.
The visitors rode the three-point shooting of senior Ayden Howe (two first-quarter three-pointers) to charge to a 24-14 lead, and then used DeVito’s nine points in the second period to go into halftime with a comfortable 43-24 lead.
The Tigers, though, would find the going much more difficult in the second half, as the Steamers stormed back in the third quarter to narrow the deficit to 54-47 at the end of the period.
“I told the team at halftime that playing with a big lead in a league game on the road would be a test of its maturity,” SIA head coach Mike Mazella noted. “Unfortunately, I don’t think we passed that test. We were complacent and lackadaisical in the third quarter, and we paid the price.
“It’s a credit to St. Ann’s, who played harder than we did despite the deficit and it playing short-handed.”
In the fourth quarter, SIA would see its lead shrink to three after a Steamer three-point play, but a jumper from DeVito and subsequent steal and layup by the senior swingman helped restore a seven-point Tigers lead.
“Luke is a closer for us,” Mazella offered. “He raises his game in the fourth quarter and just has a knack for getting steals and offensive rebounds when we need them the most. When most players are showing signs of fatigue, he just shifts into another gear to make key plays for us.”
DeVito scored nine in the fourth quarter, while Nowak tallied seven to help thwart the host’s comeback attempt.
The Tigers, off to their best start in several years, will enter their winter break before facing Port Richmond in the Christmas Showcase at McKee/Staten Island Tech on Dec. 27.
