Around NYC
1. Trump endorses Blakeman in race for N.Y. governor
President Donald Trump endorsed Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman in the race for New York governor, calling him “MAGA all the way” and praising his loyalty.
The endorsement came one day after Rep. Elise Stefanik dropped out of the race, leaving Blakeman as the sole Republican candidate. Recent Siena polling shows Gov. Kathy Hochul holding a double-digit lead over Blakeman, and Hochul quickly blasted the endorsement as out of step with New York voters.
2. New street vendor reforms will dramatically increase available licenses
New York City is set to dramatically expand street vending opportunities after the City Council passed a package of reforms easing long-standing license caps.
The measures allow up to 2,200 new mobile food vending licenses annually through 2031 and more than 10,000 new general merchandise licenses beginning in 2027. The bills also create stricter enforcement, new cleanliness standards and a Division of Street Vendor Assistance.
3. Hochul vetoes bill requiring two-person crews on subway trains
Gov. Kathy Hochul vetoed legislation that would have required every subway train to operate with both an operator and a conductor.
The governor cited safety standards, global transit norms and an estimated $10 million annual cost, saying the mandate would limit the MTA’s flexibility and modernization efforts. Transit unions sharply criticized the veto, though union leaders say existing contracts will prevent any immediate expansion of one-person train operation.
