FDNY names Paul Miano chief of EMS operations

CITYWIDE — FIRE COMMISSIONER Robert S. Tucker on Thursday appointed Paul Miano as Chief of EMS Operations, replacing retired Chief Michael Fields. Miano, a 26-year FDNY veteran, will oversee more than 4,000 EMTs, paramedics, officers and civilian staff across the EMS Bureau, with responsibility for operations, planning, logistics and strategic initiatives.

Miano joined FDNY EMS in 1999 as an EMT in Brooklyn, became a paramedic in 2001 and later served in Special Operations, including FEMA Urban Search and Rescue NYTF-1. He helped restructure EMS Special Operations, developed regional protocols and the Marine Paramedic program, and led EMS response planning during the Ebola outbreak. During COVID-19, Miano served as Brooklyn North commander and later oversaw the EMS Emergency Operations Center. He served the Borough Commander for Brooklyn and Staten Island until his promotion to Assistant Chief in March 2023.

Miano holds a bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan College of New York and a master’s from the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Security and Defense in Security Studies.
