NEW YORK, N.Y. — The quartet of juniors Hazel Lewis, Charlotte McFarland and Maeve Paul and eighth grader Eden Hynes of Kingston High smashed the Tigers’ school record in the girls’ 4×1,500-meter relay by almost a minute at the Jim Mitchell Invitational at the Nike Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City on Saturday, Dec. 20.
The foursome ran a time of 20 minutes, 25.04 seconds, which was nearly a minute better than the school record of 21:24.42 established by Lewis, McFarland, Paul, and Madeline Sykes during last year’s indoor track and field season. The Kingston quartet finished second in the highly competitive race.
This was the first time that Hynes had competed on a relay of any kind. It was also only her second indoor track and field meet ever.
“It feels really good,” Hynes said after the meet. “I did not think I would do that well, but I was proud of it and our team.”
The quartet is currently ranked second in the United States in the event.
“It is what we have worked so hard for, and a privilege to see how far we’ve come,” McFarland said.
The majority of the Kingston indoor track and field team performed earlier in the day at the same venue in the Section 9 Holiday Classic.
Marcode Campbell won the boys’ 55-meter dash in a time of 6.95 seconds.
“It felt good, but I know I would have done better had I been allowed to wear spikes,” Campbell said.
In the season-opening Coach Saint Invitational on Friday, Dec. 12, at The Armory, Campbell achieved a state standard (6.69 seconds) in the sprint event, meaning if he can finish in the top three in upcoming qualifiers, he can go to states.
“I expect to run personal bests in the 55, and my goal is to qualify for states in the event,” Campbell said.
Sophomore Kai’Lynn Hagen finished second in the girls’ 55-meter run with a time of 8.01 seconds. She was edged out by Monroe-Woodbury’s Sammy Jenkins, who ran a winning time of 7.78 seconds.
Later, Hagen teamed with Kylee Dziomba, Brittanny Reyes-Bonilla, and Micayla Sandy to finish third in the 4×200-meter relay in a time of 1:57.73.
In the boys’ field events, Kingston’s Richard Sullivan took third in the shot put with a toss of 39 feet, seven inches, and Blake Soshensky was third in the triple jump with a leap of 38-9.
Overall, Kingston’s indoor track and field team collected 13 personal bests.
The Tigers will return to The Armory to compete in the Marine Corps Classic on Saturday, Dec. 27.
