New York advocates are responding to the news of sweeping restrictions on gender-related care for transgender minors.
Last week, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced it wanted to take a hardline stance on what is and isn’t acceptable treatment.
The Trump administration is threatening to cut off federal funding from hospitals that provide gender-related care to minors.
However, New York advocates said this could cause harm to a population that’s already vulnerable.
“From my standpoint, I can tell you what the evidence says and even all the experts say,” said Dr. Gwen Zeigler, a neurologist. “Within the population, within the trans population, you do see an increase in anxiety, an increase in depression. You see an increase in suicidality.”
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach for gender-related treatments for minors. Care can include hormones, puberty blockers, mental health support, voice therapy and surgeries, but not every care plan looks the same.
Advocates say care especially for minors is typically measured.
“It is a very intentional process,” said Kei Williams, executive director of The New Pride Agenda. “It is a well-studied process. And again, major medical, trade associations have protocols that doctors have to pay attention to.”
In a report, the administration claims some of the procedures could cause infertility, diminished bone density and altered brain function.
“So called gender-affirming care has inflicted lasting and psychological damage on vulnerable young people,” said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Gender-related care is legal in New York State law requires most insurers and health care providers cover medically necessary care, including mental health services, hormones and gender dysphoria.
In a statement, New York Attorney General Letitia James spoke directly to the transgender community.
“As of now, nothing has changed,” James said. “Your health care is still legal and protected.”
The ACLU said it will challenge the Trump administration’s efforts.
