A fast moving storm dubbed the Alberta Clipper will push freezing air into the US Northeast and mid-Atlantic states Friday, dropping snow on New York City before turning to rain in Washington, D.C.

The cold will follow relatively mild temperatures for Christmas, after which New York City and surrounding areas could see 2-5 inches of snow, though bands of heavy snowfall could dump as much as 6 inches in places, said Sean Bratton, a meteorologist with Commodity Weather Group. This precipitation will turn to rain as the clipper moves south.
