Last night, My Morning Jacket returned to the stage in New York for the second show in a three-show engagement at the Brooklyn Paramount. After an explosive performance on Thursday night set off the band’s first dates in the city since 2023 with a special Z 20th anniversary celebration and a live debut of the 2005 album outtake “The Devil’s Peanut Butter,” the acclaimed roots-rock outfit managed to exceed high expectations with their follow-up, including first-time Velvet Underground and Metallica covers and a surprise sit-in from Karina Rykman.
My Morning Jacket began their Friday performance with “At Dawn,” the title track from their 2001 sophomore album, then proceeded into a 24-song showcase of favorites from throughout their catalog. After certified classics like “Circuital,” “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 1,” “Golden” and “Least Expected,” the band offered up “Lemme Know” as the evening’s first cut from is, their 10th studio album and the core of their 2025 touring; “River Road,” “Out in the Open” and a set-closing dance number of “Dancefloors” represented the project through the duration of the performance.
Given My Morning Jacket’s reluctance to repeat songs for the same audience, multi-night runs always bring eclectic setlists, and night two in Brooklyn was no exception to the rule. Rarer originals like “Remnants,” “Nashville to Kentucky” and “Slow Slow Tune” cropped up before the band launched a first-time cover of The Velvet Underground’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror,” effortlessly melded with “I’m Amazed.”
As they moved into the show’s final sequence, My Morning Jacket welcomed ace bassist and NYC native Karina Rykman to lend her talents to a treatment of “Cobra.” In between phases of the fan-favorite multi-part 2002 track, the band and their returning collaborator launched a debut treatment of Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” which gave the group the momentum they needed to power through an encore of “State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.),” “The Way That He Sings” and “One Big Holiday.”
My Morning Jacket will finish their series at the Brooklyn Paramount tonight, then wrap up the is Tour with eight more shows in the Midwest and Southeast through Nov. 1. Find tickets and more information at mymorningjacket.com.
