LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (WCAX) – A last-minute scheduling change means you have the chance to see a World Cup finals event in our region next month.
Lake Placid’s ski jumping complex is already hosting the FIS Freestyle Aerials World Cup in January. Now, because of the warm weather in Utah, the finals will be in Lake Placid, too.
“With the weather out West, we have been lucky here in the Northeast with Mother Nature, and so in the end, it is just about giving the athletes the best place to train and compete so that they can do what they do best which is in their sport that they have trained basically sometimes their whole life for,” said Darcy Norfolk Rowe, the communications director for the Olympic Regional Development Authority.
Local officials say the World Cup is great for the economy in the Adirondacks, with extended stays at local hotels.
It also keeps Lake Placid at the forefront of international sports.
“The value of having these international events– it is multiple levels. There is, we are on the international stage, so, that helps keep Lake Placid and the Adirondack on a multitude of audiences,” said Mary Jane Lawrence, the COO of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism.
Olympic officials say the world-class aerial athletes will also stick around the region after the events to train before heading to Milano Cortina for the Winter Olympics.
The World Cup kicks off Jan. 11 at Lake Placid’s Olympic Jumping Complex and the finals are Jan. 16-18.
New Hampshire’s Waterville Valley will host the moguls and dual moguls events on Jan. 15-16.
