HOW IT HAPPENED
Manhattan put the defensive pressure on Fairfield early as a pair of chances from the Stags were both blocked within seconds in the opening minute.
Rivaling the previous sequence, William Fagerberg and Martin Rodriguez fired another two shots on goal in the eighth minute, both saved by the Stags’ Viktor Nikolov.
Later in the first half, Fagerberg made up a majority of the Jaspers’ five shots before the halftime break ensued.
Following a yellow card, Thiago da Silva clocked a shot just past the left side over the net in the 53rd minute.
Late in the match off a corner kick, Fairfield capitalized on their chance to break the ice.
A free kick from the Green and White in the 85th minute had the crowd holding their breath, but Lucas Cobo’s shot pinged off the crossbar.
One final heave went into the offensive zone in the final seconds, but the ball clicking off of Max Asplin-Rowley ended the match in favor of the Stags.
