HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) — More than a thousand families came out to PS 197 for an annual Christmas toy drive, as a Harlem native worked to bring joy to children across the community.

The block along Fifth Avenue in Harlem came alive with a line of families wrapped around the corner.

“Very, very, very excited,” exclaimed Queen Harold, who attended the event.

She added, “Christmas is not really about toys, but I’m actually excited to get some toys so I can play with and stuff.”

Inside, the school’s gymnasium was transformed into a Christmas wonderland, overflowing with toys and coats for the more than 1,200 families in attendance. Volunteers know firsthand the difference this event makes.

“When I first came to the building and I seen the line I started to cry,” said volunteer Blue Jasmine.

She added, “I’ve personally been in spaces where I’ve needed assistance or needed help you know what I mean. So, to be able to be on the other side of the table and give back, it feels amazing.”

Veronica Norton, a mother living in a shelter, said bringing her children not only added a little extra sparkle to their holiday but also eased her financial burden.

“Relief because at this time of the year it’s like, ends are low,” Norton said. “So, this is like a big, big blessing.”

Kids even got to show off their best moves in a dance contest, competing for the chance to win a brand-new PlayStation. Harlem native Michelle Smalls, with the help of her friends, has devoted herself to organizing the toy drive every year after recognizing the struggles many local families face.

“I was that same child,” said Smalls. “I didn’t have when I was small, so I was traumatized on Christmas. So now, I make so many kids happy and it just — it’s like therapy to me.”

For Smalls, the event is about giving families a moment of joy they’ll remember long after the holiday season.

Now in its 18th year, this toy drive has become a tradition that continues to grow. Organizers hope it will continue to grow and reach more families in the years to come.
