Parts of New York state will see strong winds and heavy rain until Monday, thanks to a significant weather system coming in.

According to the National Weather Service, Staten Island will be particularly impacted from late Sunday night through Monday morning. Residents are warned to prepare for potentially disruptive weather conditions that could disrupt the Monday morning commute.

The NWS forecasts up to around 1 inch of rain in a short period, with the heaviest expected between late Sunday night and early Monday morning. This is accompanied by strong winds, bringing 25 to 30 mph gusts on Sunday, which could become even stronger by Monday.

As well as the hazardous weather, the incoming storm system will bring mild temperatures not usually seen at this time of year, with Sunday reaching highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Meanwhile, gale-force winds are heading for the state with the potential to blow down trees and cause power outages.

“A brief period of gale force gusts will be possible just ahead of the frontal passage Sunday night into Monday morning,” says the National Weather Service.

Gusty winds are predicted in the counties of Eastern Addison, Eastern Chittenden, and Eastern Franklin until late Monday morning.

“Tree limbs could be blown down due to leaves remaining on trees in several areas, and isolated power outages may result,” says NWS.

Flooding could also be an issue for urban and poorly drained areas during the Monday morning rush hour. According to the NWS, heavy rain could run with a minor storm tide, increasing flooding risks in New York City metropolitan areas. Those based in low-lying areas should make sure they’re prepared and monitor local conditions so as not to get caught out.

Meanwhile, in New York City, similar conditions are to be expected, with mild temperatures and potentially significant rainfall forecast.

However, this period of problematic weather is expected to clear up quickly by Monday afternoon, drying up while temperatures return to seasonal norms.

Once the rain clears up, these predominantly dry conditions, with temperatures remaining normal, are forecast to continue for the remainder of the week.
