As crowds get ready to flood Times Square to ring in 2026, the MTA is out with its game plan for getting you to and from the fun.
The transit agency says there will be a total of 11 additional Long Island Rail Road trains on Wednesday to accommodate riders heading into New York City. Metro-North will have extra late night and post-midnight service for those coming in from the Hudson Valley and Connecticut and heading back to those areas.
The city’s subways will run on a weekday schedule on New Year’s Eve and a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Day. The MTA says its also increasing the number of subways running on lines going through Times Square in the early evening through after midnight, to help passengers reach and then leave the celebration.
However, for security reasons, trains will skip stops in and around Times Square from 15 minutes until the ball drop until 15 minutes after it’s over.

New Jersey Transit says that on Dec. 29, 30, 31 and on Jan. 2, trains will operate on a modified weekday schedule with certain Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line morning peak period trains canceled and additional late morning trains operating on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines.
On New Year’s Eve, trains will operate on a modified weekday schedule (morning peak period and midday adjustments) with additional service to New York and Hoboken from the late afternoon through the evening on the RVL, M&E and Port Jervis Lines.
NJ Transit says that after midnight (early Jan. 1), additional late-night trains will operate on all rail lines except the Atlantic City Line. Additional trains will depart Penn Station New York, Hoboken and Trenton, with connecting trains departing from Newark Broad Street, Summit and Long Branch through the early morning hours. Raritan Valley Line service operates from New York all night. Several trains that normally operate between 11:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 1:30 a.m. early New Year’s morning are canceled and replaced by later trains. After 6:30 a.m., a regular weekend/major holiday schedule operates (including Port Jervis Line Train 88).
