STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The National Weather Service has expanded a winter weather advisory to include Staten Island and the rest of the New York City area.

The weather advisory warns of a chance of freezing rain until around 10 p.m. Sunday, with a “light glaze” of ice possibly to follow, according to the weather alert.

Along with New York City, the winter weather alert includes parts of Connecticut along with Nassau and Suffolk counties.

The National Weather Service also warns that sidewalks, roads and bridges can be very slippery due to ice accumulating.

The weather service is advising people to slow down while driving and to prepare for possible power outages due to the ice.

Later on Sunday, the surface temperatures should rise above freezing and turn any precipitation to just rain, according to the weather alert.

Throughout the upcoming week, temperatures are expected to fluctuate, leading to more treacherous, icy conditions.

Warmer temperatures, combined with rain in the forecast, will cause substantial melting. Then, temperatures will fall again later in the week.

This freeze-thaw-refreeze pattern creates the perfect conditions for black ice – nearly invisible patches of ice on roads and walkways that can cause dangerous falls and vehicle accidents.
