STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Could snow mix with the confetti set to fall in Times Square during the ball drop Wednesday night?

According to the latest forecast, it’s possible.

While it may not necessarily begin snowing around midnight, New York City residents can expect some snowflakes to ring in the New Year.

Tuesday marks yet another day in which the city is experiencing chilly conditions amid what Dave Dombek, an AccuWeather senior meteorologist, identified as a cold pattern.

Windy conditions, which began Monday evening, will continue through Tuesday afternoon. The day is set to only record a high around the freezing mark of 32 degrees, Dombek explained, and a low of about 25.

Gusts will reach about 30 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

“We do expect a few flurries to be in the air at times late tonight (Tuesday) and maybe into early tomorrow (Wednesday),” Dombek told the Advance/SILive.com.

Flurries could appear between midnight and 9 a.m. Wednesday. Any snow that does come down will result in nothing more than a dusting.

“And then that [flurries] passes, that’ll move on by and get out of here later in the morning and midday, and then tomorrow afternoon it will just be kind of a brisk, cold, but dry afternoon weather-wise,” added Dombek.

Wednesday’s high is forecast to reach 34 degrees Fahrenheit in the city.

The weather forecast for NYE

New Year’s Eve will feature mostly cloudy skies and the approach of a moisture-starved clipper-style system.

“We do expect that system to, at the very least, produce some flurries for us, some flakes of snow, maybe not right away tomorrow night, but sometime later in the evening after 9 or 10 o’clock, 11 o’clock, as we head toward midnight,” Dombek said.

At some point in the late evening hours and into Thursday morning, it is possible for some light snow to come down for a couple of hours. According to Dombek, this snow could result in a dusting.

Dave Radell, a meteorologist with the weather service, does not believe snow will begin until 4 a.m. or 5 a.m.

Temperatures will be around freezing by the time the ball drops Wednesday. Dombek believes the city will be around 30 degrees to welcome the new year.

While winds might whip around on Tuesday, they do not look to pose an issue for Wednesday.

“We do expect New Year’s Day overall to be a brisk and pretty cold day, but mostly dry,” said Dombek.

Thursday will feature a high around 29 degrees and partly sunny skies, he added.
