City completes rollout of 20 mph slow zones under Sammy’s Law

CITYWIDE — New York City is days away from fully enforcing 20 mph speed limits across roughly 250 designated slow zones, finishing a rollout that began in October 2024 under Sammy’s Law, reports The Sun.

The Department of Transportation said signage will be in place citywide by Dec. 31, reducing default speeds from 25 mph in targeted areas, including corridors near schools, open streets and dense residential blocks. Thirteen open and shared streets will carry 10 mph limits, and school slow zones will drop to 15 mph.

The law honors Sammy Cohen Eckstein, killed by a driver near his Park Slope home in 2013, and gives the city authority to set lower local limits. City officials say enforcement will expand in early 2026 as additional zones are identified and evaluated.
