A school has opened in Newark, New Jersey, which is among the first in the state to “prepare high school students for careers in the building industry.” Named the Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design, the initiative is a partnership between the Newark Public Schools and Pratt Institute, with Pratt faculty collaborating with district educators to create a curriculum introducing students to architecture, interior design, and construction skills.

The design of the school itself features a five-story, glass-enclosed stairwell that captures views over Newark’s Ironbound district. In addition to studio-based learning, the school will host a “Survey of Trades” course offering instruction in plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.

“We are proud to partner and launch the Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design, bringing Pratt Institute’s world-renowned expertise to expand youth access to the creative disciplines through the public school system,” said Pratt President Frances Bronet. “This partnership builds on our long history of creating cradle-through-career pathways for young people, from the opening of our Saturday Art School program in 1897 to our more recent collaboration with Bank Street College of Education and the New York City’s Department of Education to found Design Works High School.”
