We are talking about population growth this week on In Focus.
JoDee Kenney sits down with Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon to talk about the boom the county and, by extension, Central New York is seeing thanks to Micron’s investment.
He says they are in the process of finalizing the environmental impact statement. He calls it the most extensive environmental review on the federal, state and local level in the U.S. ever. Micron is looking to break ground on the facility in December. There have been ongoing workforce development investments with OCC. A Micron clean room lab is open to students from across the state. It’s to help them get the accreditation to become a technician.
McMahon talked about how Micron is addressing the environmental impact of the facility and spoke about the need for mitigation strategies and public hearings connected to the permits. According to McMahon, most other similar projects across the country aren’t getting federal review, but Micron is. He says the eyes and ears of every regulatory agency at county, state and federal level are reviewing this mitigation strategy to make sure it passes the smell test. McMahon also touched on the investments in students made by area colleges and universities including Syracuse, RIT, U of R, Cornell and the SUNY system.
