State reports sharp drop in overdose deaths

ALBANY — NEW YORK STATE recorded a steep decline in overdose fatalities in 2025, with officials pointing to expanded treatment access and targeted investments as key drivers.

The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports reported in a year-end update that overdose deaths fell by more than 30% statewide this year, following what the agency described as systemwide expansion of addiction care. Officials said investments focused on addiction treatment through mobile units, brick-and-mortar programs and services inside correctional facilities. The agency also worked to accelerate the distribution of opioid settlement funds to local providers.

OASAS also cited workforce investments, public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing stigma and new initiatives addressing problem gambling. 

Commissioner Dr. Chinazo Cunningham also outlined the agency’s accomplishments and priorities for 2026, pledging a continued emphasis on treatment access, prevention and community-level support across New York.
