Affordable housing project planned for Bed-Stuy city-owned site

BED-STUY — CITY HOUSING OFFICIALS have designated a longtime community nonprofit to build more than 70 apartments on an underused city-owned lot in Bed-Stuy, in a deal that will provide new housing while also preserving a community garden.

The city Department of Housing Preservation and Development has selected IMPACCT Brooklyn to develop at least 70 units at 913 Kent Ave., with roughly 60% set aside as supportive housing. The project will share the site with the Myrtle Avenue community garden, offering approximately 20,000 square feet of green space while adding potential ground-floor community uses.

“Today’s announcement brings more than 70 units of affordable and supportive housing to an underutilized piece of city-owned land in Bed-Stuy and reflects our commitment to turning urgency into results for New Yorkers who need housing now,” Acting HPD Commissioner Ahmed Tigani said.

Councilmember Lincoln Restler said, “Supportive housing is the evidence-based solution to chronic homelessness in New York City.”

The proposal will next move through financing and land-use approvals, with opportunities for community input expected as plans are finalized.
